Fight Scene of the Week! Barry

WARNING! These scenes contain violence and adult content. View at your own risk!

This is, in my opinion, the most realistic fight scene ever filmed. It's not from an action movie, or a martial arts super star. It's from HBO's Barry, starring Bill Hader. Leave it to a comedian to do the job right. And the awesome choreography? Of course it's from a Krav Maga guy. Old-school Krav Maga Worldwide instructor, Wade Allen! He clearly understands how to bring elements of realism. The sloppy technique, heavy breathing, being tired like 10 seconds in to the fight, slamming in to walls and other objects, Ronny knocking himself out giving a headbutt, all just perfect! It also contains plenty of ....

The last scene I posted with Tom Hardy he got his ass kicked, so I've got to balance it out a little. There might not be a lot of action and flash here, but what it lacks in those areas it makes up for with pure bad-assery and brutality. I feel like this series wasn't as popular as it should have been, so If you haven't seen it then I highly recommend it. Enjoy! ....

If you're into South Korean revenge movies in the vein of Old Boy, then you should check out The Man from Nowhere. Quick synopsis: Guy with gender neutral haircut kicks the shit out of bad guys. The fight/action scenes are really well done and aren't overly martial artsy. There are a lot of great scenes in the movie, and maybe I'll post them in the future, but I picked this one because, well, you can't go wrong with a bathroom fight scene. Enjoy! ....

Before there was John Wick, there was the FAR superior Neo. That's right. I said it. John Wick is great and all, but Neo is where it's at. While John was playing with guns, Neo was completely dodging bullets, that's next level shit. There were great scenes through out the series, but this is where Neo first gets his fighting abilities so it's extra special. Enjoy! ....

Ray Donovan is probably one of my favorite series o all time, and it's got a ton of great scenes, but how could I not choose the one with Ray fighting an Israeli spy? It's a short scene with no frills, but it's simplicity is what makes it awesome. And I always love when the hero (or anti-hero) takes a bit of a beating. Enjoy! ....

Here's an other one by request. David Bautista beating up a Russian assassin in an elevator? Doesn't get much more American than that! There is one thing that really bugs me in this scene though, and the first person to guess what it is wins a FREE Apex shirt! Enjoy! ....

Probably some of the best martial arts choreography of the last 10-15 years. Pretty much non-stop action from start to finish, so if you're one for a plot then this probably isn't the movie for you. While most people think this is a Kung Fu movie, the main art is pencak silat, an Indonesian martial arts that has some obvious similarities to Kung Fu. See if you can count how many throat punches and kicks to the knee there are :) Enjoy! ....

Full-frontal, male nudity warning! One of the most intense and realistic fight scenes ever made, in my opinion. It's super raw and visceral. No dramatic music and no fancy choreography, just pure brutality. If you haven't seen it, then don't say I didn't warn you. It's definitely a little uncomfortable to watch, especially for the guys! I guess there's not much more to say about it other than "YIKES!" Enjoy! (?) ....

And after a short hiatus, we're back! Another scene from Punisher. Shocker! Although technically the first scene was from Daredevil sooooo....I win. I still love that prison scene, but they really upped the ante in season 2 of Punisher. So many good fight scenes in there, but this one in the gym is my favorite. Great choreography, once again, and an awesome guest appearance by former UFC fighter Keith "The Dean of Mean" Jardine. My favorite thing about the Punisher is that no matter how many times he gets smashed in the face by a giant UFC fighter, a week later he just has some black eyes and a fat lip. ....

Bruce is back! Even though I have a hatred for Bruce Lee quotes, he's still my biggest martial arts influence and this blog won't be complete without every single one of his fight scenes. I've heard some people argue that this is his best fight scene. I don't know why. It's pretty awful. Down-right ridiculous even. The choreography is pretty shit, even for 1972, BUT it's a classic "dojo storm" scene and "My kung fu is better than your karate" always makes for a great story. There are also some great haircuts in there. My personal favorite is Guy Who Gets His Ass Kicked #3, thats an epic 'do. And if you watch ....

I was contacted by Seagal's people. He was pretty upset he wasn't on the list. Just kidding. As much of a walking cartoon character he's become over the years, these early Steven Seagal movies are probably only second to Bruce Lee in how much they influenced my love of the martial arts. And while there are far better scenes from the early days, this one is one of my favorites. Not because of the fighting, but because of how silly it is. All of the shitty one-liners and Steven's waaaay over the top New York accent are reason eough to love this scene. We also get a quick glimpse of the always rare ....

There was a period in high school where I was obsessed with old, Japanese Samurai movies, and Zatoichi is the king! He's a humble, seemingly innocent, blind, gambling bad ass! I think this is the longest scene I've posted, but I couldn't bring myself to shorten it because the build up is the best part. The fight scene itself is quick, but it's very well choreographed for a sword fight in a low-budget movie from 1967. No CGI. No quick-cut scenes. Just pure skill. Enjoy! ....

Netflix has been on fire lately! I think their original content has produced some of the best fight scenes in the last few years, and while Punisher is still my fav, this one is right up there. The movie as a whole was...okay, but this fight scene is awesome. Ok be honest, how many of you thought this was gonna be the scene where he fights the bear? Well sorry to disappoint. This is actually a completely underrated fight scene. Most people know how great of movie it is, but even I forgot how awesome the fight was. There's so much fight scene content it's not even funny, and while everyone expects Beatrix vs the Crazy 88 (which is also an amazing scene), this one is my absolute favorite in the whole series. It's. So. Good. In fact, it's probably in my top 10 favorites of all time. It's a longer scene, but you can't not watch the whole thing. There are several scenes in the film that showcase some krav maga (the hollywood-ized version at least) but this one is probably the best. While this is admittedly one of my least favorite Christmas movies, this is an amazing scene. Some people debate Die Hard's status as a Christmas movie...those people have ZERO Christmas spirit. It's an all-time classic, and so is the fight scene between John McClane and Karl. McClane's cut up feet, Karl's flowing locks and German accent, and let us not overlook the treasure trove of awesome one-liners. There's just so much cheesy action movie awesomeness here. What holiday season would be complete without fight scenes from classic holiday movies?? And yes, Lethal Weapon IS a holiday movie! And it's one of my childhood favorites. I haven't watched it in a long time, and it wasn't until I watched it when I was older that I realized how bad the main fight scene was. Bad in a good way. The choreography is pretty terrible, but what do you expect from cheesy 90's action movies? It was also one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, and I'm not afraid to admit that. Probably one of my all time favorite. I tend to favor realism and rawness over fancy martial arts choreography, and this one fits the bill perfectly. Daredevil had some of the best fight scenes out of any of the Marvel series, but this was the standout. You may be disappointed if you head over the the Punisher series in search of more great fight scenes, they really dropped the ball there, but they have a chance to make up for it in the 2nd season. Greatest. Martial. Arts. Movie. Of. All. Time. Do not argue otherwise. You're opinion is invalid. This movie is the reason I got into martial arts, and although my fighting style as evolved way past any obvious Bruce influences, it's place in inspiring thousand and thousands of martial artists over the years cannot be overlooked. The story line to the movie is ridiculous, most of the fight scenes are over the top and typical of the era, but, the opening scene is a different story. It's choreography is definitely silly, but there are a couple small things that showcase why Bruce was so ahead of his time. ....

Most fans of the Bourne movies are more than familiar with the famous fight scene from the first film in the series, where Jason Bourne's weapon of choice is a pen (don't worry, that one is coming up soon :) ), but my personal favorite is Bourne vs Desh from the Bourne Ultimatum. The choreography of the first film is great, but I think this one a bit more raw, and I like that. As great as it is, it's not without it's flaws. The major flaw being the use of a book as an improvised weapon. Overall, not a bad choice, but there's a part that always bugged me about it, and the first person to correctly guess what it is gets ....

Great choreography, great performance from Charlize Theron, and lot's of realism portrayed here. Directed by David Leitch, the same guy who directed John Wick, this is basically the female version of that movie. We're back for week two of Fight Scene of the Week! Going back the 90's for this one. 1997 to be exact. Grosse Point Blank is the film and John Cusack is our hero. Even though this film isn't that old, I really think it's one of the first to contain any sense of realism. Most fight scenes before this were either waaaaay over the top or just plain silly. This one definitely has some hints of cheesiness but it's moving in the right direction. Welcome to the first installment of Fight Scene Of The Week! This scene is from the Korean film, Old Boy. There are a few fight sequences in the film but this is my favorite! Whats great about it? For starters, it's one continuous shot in a confined space with almost no editing. I believe the only editing is a knife to the back. The choreography isn't the fanciest or cleanest but it does a great job of capturing a raw vibe, and the use of a hammer as the main characters weapon of choice is pretty neat. The movie itself has a pretty messed up story line, so be warned if you decide to watch the whole thing. ....
